It’s so easy to poo-poo everything outside of our arena of experience.

But we’ve just passed the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month here today. Wherever you are in the UK, whatever shop or precinct, there will be a 2 minutes silence called.

Some people (especially the older ones) stand still and bow their heads in remembrance. Most will just carry on as normal!

When you drive from Calais to Paris down the A1 highway, you will pass The Somme. I know. We’ve done it several times.

My brother-in-law takes people there every year at this time to visit the battlefield.

Europe holds the memory of 1914 to 1918. Hardly a British family was untouched by the death of a loved one.
