By no stretch of any imagination would I call myself a Biblical Scholar. But….

Ten books into researching the Black Madonna Phenomenon and I get shoved into the Bible.

OK. I’ll start there.

Song of Solomon : I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.
[6] Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.

Another quote, source withheld:

“She is, nevertheless, black because Wisdom (Sophia) is black, having existed in the darkness of Chaos before the creation. This is explained in a 3rd century tractate entitled On The Origin of the World. Sophia was considered to represent the Holy Spirit which, according to Genesis 1:1, ‘moved on the face of the waters’ and brought light to the world when ‘darkness was upon her face.’
